canada. i document this tore on a map that i painted for the project and also from previous projects called the road map to lost america. on the map i have taken all of the contemporary borders off the map and replaced them with native territories, and then overlaid it with contemporary highways. i have scheduled venue stops at different areas along the tour, from california to south dakota, that will serve as headquarters for my local research. when i was researching the traveling medicine show, i came across this. they had put out an elixir, and it referred to the elements that came out because of the high stress, high-pressure life, mostly because of the industrial revolution. anyway, i was fascinated by the term american-itis, and i thought it did a lot about the stress-related illnesses, and i was impressed that they picked up on that and the 1800's. i did a survey to see if it was irrelevant element today. i have a series of eight painted banners that are retellings of american history. i am particularly interested in transition history between native and european histories and

whitfield. okay, tropical storm earl makes landfall in eastern canada downing power lines, sparking power outages and it's creating dangerous surf along the east coast in its wake. earl never did make landfall in the u.s., so now some u.s. beaches are open again, however, there are still some dangers in the surf. our team coverage begins right here, we're covering this storm or what's left of it. susan candiotti is live from cape cod, massachusetts, and our jacqui jeras right here in the weather city, let's begin with you. >> earl is over the gulf of st. lawrence now and moving very, very quickly up to the north into the east. here you can see nova scotia, there's maine for perspective. the storm moves up towards new finland and then eventually make its way out of there and become what we call extra tropical. 70-mile-per-hour winds, that can cause a lot of damage. so even though it's a tropical storm, you don't ever want to say just a tropical storm, because still plenty of damage. there you can see the path of where it continues to go and pull away from the united states. some of the win

now downgraded to a tropical storm and it is pounding canada this hour with winds gusting to 75 miles an hour. it made landfall in nova scotia bringing power outages everywhere for the last week. we've been watching earl whirl around the caribbean, tearing off rooftops and toppling trees, then earl headed forour east coast. and new england is bracing for the worst but they are thankful this time they dodged the bullet. jennifer davis has the latest in cape cod. >> you are absolutely right. new england was getting ready if preparing a big storm but in the end, earl blew on by. today it has been a picture perfect day as locals scramble to get back to business as usual. >> earl weakening from a mighty hurricane to a tropical storm still bringing with it plenty of wind and waves but not nearly enough to bother new englanders that is used to all sorts of rough weather. >> we were hoping for more of that. >> it came down in preparation what could be a serious blast of hurricane-force wind and rain but the signs are going back up and business owners hope it will be economically viable labor

lucky here in the united states, our friends in canada won't be so lucky. earl is about to make landfall as a very strong tropical storm in nova scotia. so the most damage that earl will sprou going to happen take up this from halifax down to nova scotia. 70-miles-per-hour winds, but the storm is moving quickly. so by later today, the storm will be long gone. so what's next? september is the peak of the hurricane season. usually one storm after another. it looks like we'll miss the storm once again. this is a slow moving system, should be near puerto rico about five days from now, so we have plenty of time to watch it and there's no threat to the united states as we go through the labor day weekend. back to you. >>> overseas, they're still as cessing the damage this morning after a major earthquake in new zealand. it measure 7.1 and was centered on the south island just west of christ church, the country's second largest city. melissa stokes of tvnz is in christ church for us. we know there was certain for people trapped in rubble. what do we know about any rescues or casualties at this
